The Missing Blues

Hikaru knew the day didn’t start out well the moment he left his home. He was also aware that it was steadily getting worse as he went from class to dragging class. Now as he slouched at his desk, jaw in hand, staring out the window, he was just about ready to die.

“It’ll be fine, huh..” he said silently to himself.

At the Hitachiin home a few hours ago, up the stairs and in the twins’ room sat a stubborn Hikaru on his brother’s bed. He was holding a thermometer of which the reading was 39.1 degrees celsius. Hikaru looked at his brother in question, Kaoru, who was under thick blankets and looking more than “just a little feverish,” as he so insisted that he was.

“You can’t go to school today.”

“I know,” he heard Kaoru say quietly before he belted out a string of coughs. Alarmed, Hikaru set down the thermometer and patted his brother’s convulsing back until it subsided.

“I’ll stay home with you,” the worried twin sat back down after offering his other half a glass of water, “You need someone to take care of you.”

“No,” his brother’s protest came out almost like a cry, “No, that’s all right. You need to go to school and take notes for me.”

“But..”

His brother smiled at him and lightly touched his arm, “It’ll be fine.. I’ll be all right.”

Hikaru didn’t like the idea of being separated from his brother for a day, especially not when one of them is ill. He sighed, turning away from the window and to the wall clock hanging above the chalkboard.

At least the family doctor had been called over from Germany.

He diverted his attention from the timepiece and started scribbling whatever the instructor was saying about run-on sentences and comma splices.

He should be at the house by lunchtime.. Until then, I hope Kaoru rests well.
